Rebar is sold by the stick and specified by the metre, which is where most homeowner estimates come apart. This calculator counts the bars in a grid or a footing, converts the run to metres, and applies the mass per metre that CSA G30.18 sets for Canadian metric bar, so the weight is real rather than an approximation off an American chart.

Quantities only. Lap splices where one bar meets the next, chairs to hold the grid at the right height in the pour, tie wire and any bar the engineer added for a specific load are all extra, and the lap length in particular comes off your drawings rather than off a general chart. How the bar count is worked out
For each direction of a grid, take the span the bars are spaced across, in inches, subtract the edge clearance twice, divide by the spacing, take the whole number and add one. The plus one is the bar at the far end, and forgetting it is the commonest error in a hand count. Each bar's own length is the other dimension less the clearance at both ends.
Both directions are counted and added, the total feet convert to metres at exactly 0.3048 metres to the foot, and the weight is that figure times the bar's mass per metre. Two Ontario suppliers, 2AZ Group in Mississauga and Brampton and Dass Rebar in Woodbridge, publish the same CSA G30.18 masses, which is a useful sign the figures are the standard's rather than a supplier's.
The stock-bar count is given twice on purpose. Reusing offcuts is the cheaper number and the one a fabricator would quote; cutting every run from a fresh bar is what actually happens on a small site with no bar bender, and on a slab with awkward dimensions the difference is not small.
What a bar chart cannot tell you
Spacing is a design decision, not a default. The figures on this page are 2AZ Group's published Ontario guidance for ordinary residential work, and they are a sensible starting point for a shed pad or a garden wall. They are not a substitute for engineered drawings on anything that carries a building, and underpinning in Toronto requires engineer-stamped drawings before a permit is issued at all.
Three things the count leaves out: lap splices where one bar continues past another, chairs that hold the grid at the right height rather than letting it sit on the ground where it does nothing, and tie wire. The lap length in particular depends on the bar, the concrete strength and the job, so it belongs on a drawing.

How much does 10M rebar weigh per metre?
0.785 kg per metre. 2AZ Group and Dass Rebar both publish the same CSA G30.18 figures: 10M is 11.3 mm and 100 mm2 at 0.785 kg/m, 15M is 16.0 mm and 200 mm2 at 1.570 kg/m, and 20M is 19.5 mm and 300 mm2 at 2.355 kg/m.
What spacing should rebar be in a residential slab?
2AZ Group's Ontario guidance is 10M or 15M at 12 inches on centre each way for a residential slab on grade. For a strip footing it is 2 by 15M continuous top and bottom, 4 bars in total, on a typical 16 inch footing. Foundation walls take 15M at 12 or 16 inches vertically and 15M at 24 inches horizontally.
How do I work out the number of bars in a grid?
Take the span the bars are spaced across, in inches, subtract the clearance at each edge, divide by the spacing and add one. A 20 foot slab is 240 inches; with 3 inches clear at each edge and 12 inch spacing that is (240 minus 6) divided by 12, which is 19.5, floored to 19, plus one, so 20 bars in that direction.
How long is a stick of rebar in Canada?
20 feet, or 6 metres, is the standard stock length the Canadian suppliers checked here sell. A 10M bar in that length ran $7.99 at Quickbar in Welland, $9.33 at South End Timber Mart and $11.97 at Chamberlain Timber Mart in Gravenhurst in August 2026.
Does the calculator include lap splices?
No, and it says so. Where one bar has to continue past the end of another they overlap by a lap length, and that length depends on the bar size, the concrete strength and what the bar is doing, so it comes off your drawings rather than off a general chart. The same goes for chairs and tie wire.
Wire mesh or rebar for a slab?
Both are used and they are not interchangeable in price. Strong Basements in Etobicoke prices wire mesh reinforcement at $1 per square foot installed against a steel rebar grid from $8. Mesh controls shrinkage cracking in a light slab; a rebar grid is what carries load.
